Joey rescued in early 2001, pictured here in May

Macropod literally means 'big foot' and includes the wallabies, kangaroos, and their close relatives.  The main difference between the wallaby and the kangaroo is in size - as measured by their feet!

This Eastern Grey (Kangaroo) Joey was rescued early in 2001, and was looked after by one of our carers near Nowra.  This picture was taken at the May (2001) NANA meeting at Sanctuary point - after just finishing off a (marsupial) milkshake.

NANA uses variations of this 'pouch' for marsupials. Baby Roos, Wallabies and Wombats all take quickly to their new homes. While not as warmth and comfortable as a natural pouch, it seems to be an acceptable alternative - under the circumstances. They need to be made of natural fiber, as Australian wildlife will react negatively to contact with most synthetic materials.
