Experience shows that non-native birds such as the Mynah and Starling will occupy hollows and nest boxes, if they can fly straight into the entrance hole.
Baffles act as a screen, which keeps these pests out, and as a bonus stops direct sunlight entering the box, and reduces the effect of wind and rain.

The baffle is simply a piece of wood, the same width as the front of the possum box, with 'arms' to fix it to the box or lid. The baffle should be large enough to cover at least 90% of the entrance hole.

There are various ways baffles can be attached.  As possums may decide to hang on to these, and have to brush past them every time they enter and exit, make sure they are securely fastened.

The simple design to the left is easy to make, and does not interfere with the opening of the box top.

The baffle can be made of any thickness, as its main purpose is to provide screening.

In the second design, the baffle is attached to the box top by triangular supports, and is less likely to be used by possums to gain leverage.

The third design below, is similar, but the sides of the baffle are longer, and give greater strength. If attached to the lid, they also may increase the resistance to weather.

IMPORTANT!

The distance of the baffle from the front of the box (a to b in the diagram to the left) should be at least equal to the diameter of the entry hole.

As the possum needs to climb under the baffle, the clearance has to be big enough to let him through.  The entry holes have been calculated to suite the type of possum, so the clearance between the baffle and the front of the box needs to be at least the same width as the entry.
